The 1990’s was the era of the footballing forward. Some of the most notorious and influential marksmen came to prominence during the decade, with the likes of Alan Shearer, Jurgen Klinsmann, George Weah and the almighty Ronaldo all staking their claim on the sport as the very best in the world at that time. However, there is one name which instilled more fear in opposition defenders than any other; Gabriel Batistuta. Described by Diego Maradona as the ‘finest striker he had ever seen’ the man known simply as Batigol terrorised defences for nearly twenty years in his native Argentina, Italy and Qatar, as well as on the international stage where he, up until 2016, was his country’s all-time leading goalscorer. He may only have two league titles to his name, but the way he made those in attendance feel, arguably meant more to him than any piece of silverware. This is the story of Batigol: Gabriel Batistuta.
