The Australian’s Political Editor Dennis Shanahan says the details emerging from the Vatican’s “wide-ranging scandal” indicate there is much more than $2 million which has been transferred to Australia.
The Australian newspaper reported the money, allegedly linked to Cardinal George Pell’s trial, had been wired from the Vatican to Australia between February 2017 and June 2018 in four separate transactions.
Transfer details include references to Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu who has denied interfering in Cardinal Pell’s trial.
Discussing what exactly the money was transferred for, Mr Shanahan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt “there is no proof” from the details they have about “where the money went once it arrived in Australia”.
“I think that if it was used in relation to Cardinal Pell’s trial, that’s actually a small part of a much larger picture,” he said.
Mr Bolt commented, “the plot thickens … there will be an accounting, there are so many people who fed this witch-hunt”.
