In this video, Steve Caseley covers the Project Scope Statement and factors you should consider as you write your own. The three primary traits every good statement has are clarity, a lack of ambiguity, and flexibility. Adopting these characteristics will go a long way toward ensuring your project stays on track.
The project scope statement is the single most important thing you, as a project manager, need to do to ensure successful project delivery.
It defines your goals and objectives upfront, then guides all of your subsequent efforts as you measure them against the statement itself. If you don’t have a solid project scope statement, you’ll almost always end up with a runaway project that exceeds timelines, resources, and budget.
Defining what needs to be done is essential, but it’s arguably even more important to define what doesn’t need to be done. Outlining clear project boundaries is a crucial element of staying on track and avoiding mission creep.
