A tug test is a safety check that truck drivers perform to ensure that their trailer is securely connected to the tractor before starting a trip. It’s a critical step to prevent the trailer from detaching while on the road.
How a Tug Test Works:
Engage the Tractor Brakes: The driver sets the trailer brakes (so the trailer stays still) and disengages the tractor brakes.
Gently Pull Forward: The driver then slowly pulls the tractor forward, applying light pressure to "tug" on the trailer connection point.
Check for Secure Coupling: If the trailer stays securely connected to the tractor, the coupling is confirmed secure. If the trailer disconnects, the tug test prevents it from causing a major incident on the road.
This test is primarily done with fifth-wheel connections, where the tractor’s fifth-wheel mechanism locks onto the trailer’s kingpin. Performing a tug test can identify improper coupling, damaged or faulty locking mechanisms, and other potential coupling issues, making it an essential safety step.
