The LaMotte BrewLab Plus kit claims to offer quick and easy quantification of all the important minerals and ions for your brewing water. This week we finally put one of these kits to the test.
John had picked up this kit while we were at the NHC in 2019. Finally, we are getting a chance to put it to you. In the video, I show each of the tests being performed. Each test is a colorimetric test. This means that you are adding a specific reagent into a sample and waiting for a clear and distinct color change. To know the concentration of a specific ion in the water all you have to do is count your drops being added to the sample tube until the indicated color change happens.
Colorimetric tests are great because they are cheap, quick, easy and don't require special equipment.
In the end, I found the results of the kits tests to be VERY close to the values I got when I sent my home water out to Ward Labs for testing. The two sets of values were very close to each other and I wouldn't hesitate to use this kit exclusively for determining the mineral profile in my tap water for brewing.
