SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — An armed male suspect was shot and killed in a SWAT standoff in Spokane Valley on Tuesday.
Just after 11:00 p.m. on Monday night, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office says a neighbor called 9-1-1 saying they heard gunshots and noticed two bullet holes in the side of their home.
The SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiators, Mental Health Co-Responder Units, Spokane Regional Air Support Unit members, Spokane Valley Fire Department, and AMR were called to the scene at a home on East Lindsay Lane, which was where a man was barricaded.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, SWAT shot and killed the man who came outside of the home armed with a gun. SCSO says no officers were hurt in the shooting.
“We were never able to establish a rapport with him in order to de-escalate this,” Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said. “Around 10:54 this morning there was a fire reported in the residence. At about 11:06 the subject exited the residence, was confronted by the swat team, shots were fired and the subject is deceased.”
Neighbors say they were told to either hide or stay somewhere else.
“The sheriff came and told us we should evacuate,” Jane Kale, who lives near the house where the standoff happened, said. “We [then] left.”
Greenacres Elementary canceled classes for the day because of the standoff.
“As a parent, it’s pretty scary trying to keep the kids calm and not tell them what’s going on,” Stacey Yamada said.
SCSO says deputies believed the man may have been dealing with a mental health crisis. Despite the use of drones, tear gas and crisis negotiators, officials were unable to de-escalate the situation.
“They made numerous attempts to contact the subject,” Knezovich said. “However, none of them bore any fruit.”
Officials still don’t know how many homes were shot or the cause of the fire. Firefighters did notice “suspicious wiring” in the home.
No one in the neighborhood was during the standoff. SCSO is still investigating what led up to the standoff.
Washington State Police is now the lead investigator for the case. SCSO will help assist the investigation.
