Bugleweed, also known as Ajuga reptans, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Europe and Western Asia. It is a low-growing plant often used as a ground cover in garden landscaping.
Bugleweed is hardy in USDA planting zones 3-9, which covers much of the United States. It can tolerate cold temperatures and is often used as a ground cover in areas with harsh winters.
Bugleweed's stem is square and can grow up to 10 inches tall. The leaves are small, oval-shaped, and grow in rosettes. The flowers of bugleweed are typically blue or purple, although they can also be white or pink. The flowers form dense spikes and bloom in late spring or early summer.
Bugleweed prefers to grow in moist, well-draining soil, and it can tolerate some shade. Keeping the soil consistently moist is vital, especially during a drought. To encourage growth, fertilize the plant with a general-purpose fertilizer in spring. In the fall, cut back the stems to about an inch above the ground to prepare for the winter.
Plant bugleweed in the spring or fall. Space the plants about 6 inches apart to support sufficient growth. When planting, dig a hole about as deep as the roots and twice as wide. After planting, water the plant thoroughly to help it establish itself.
