The Shah of Iran made the wise decision to purchase 80 F-14 Tomcats! Some of the top Tomcat pilots in the world served in the Iranian Air Force in the 1980s, and they triumphed in combat with the Iraqi Air Force. The Iranian Air Force was so proficient during the Iran-Iraq War that only one F-14 was able to bring down three MiG-23s, which is why the United States doesn't want any of them in the air again. In 2007, Iran continued to be a strong part of George Bush's "Axis of Evil," together with North Korea. It was illogical to think that Iran would buy expensive F-14 parts from other countries in order to avoid having to use up its own stockpile. This worry prompted the Pentagon to destroy every last F-14 Tomcat that was left over. Was it really necessary for the US to destroy a million-dollar aircraft in order to prevent Iran from maintaining its ailing fleet? Not at all, no. Because F-14 parts were regarded as sensitive equipment, the US stopped selling them to anyone, including Iran, out of concern that Iran would eventually acquire them. But that doesn't matter, there isn't much Iran could do with their old F-14s.
