In May 2024, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT was introduced as the new safety car for Formula E, showcasing its impressive capabilities on some of the world’s most exciting racetracks. At the Portland E-Prix, our writer had the incredible opportunity to ride along with safety car driver Bruno Correia, experiencing firsthand the unmatched power of Porsche’s most powerful production vehicle to date. It was an unforgettable experience from the cockpit, allowing us to truly appreciate what the Taycan Turbo GT can do.
Suited up in fireproof coveralls and securely strapped into the Taycan with a four-point harness, the atmosphere inside the car was all business. Bruno Correia, a seasoned driver with years of experience, started the electric engines of the Taycan Turbo GT, and the air was filled with anticipation. The moment he engaged Attack Mode, unleashing the full potential of the car’s 1,240 newton meters of torque, it felt like time itself had accelerated. The force pressed you firmly into your seat as the car shot forward, effortlessly reaching speeds over 200 kilometers per hour in mere seconds.
As we tore down the track, Bruno handled the vehicle with precision, expertly navigating through the turns. The way he braked just before each sharp curve was nothing short of masterful, showing his deep connection with the car’s mechanics. Despite the incredible speed, the Taycan moved smoothly and quietly, delivering an exhilarating rush. The sound of the electric motors was barely audible compared to the whirr of tires against the track, making the experience different from traditional gasoline-powered races. It was fast, furious, but surprisingly silent.
The Taycan Turbo GT officially took over as the Formula E safety car in May 2024, replacing the older Taycan Turbo S. Now, with two Taycan Turbo GT models available at every Formula E event, Porsche has raised the bar for safety cars. Whether it is the stunning Taycan Turbo GT in Purple Sky Metallic or the slightly more understated model in Shade Green Metallic, both deliver phenomenal power, making them a true spectacle on the racecourse. The car accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 2.2 seconds and boasts a top speed of 305 kilometers per hour.
Bruno Correia, a 47-year-old driver who has been in the motorsport world for decades, brings his wealth of experience to the role of safety car driver. His journey started in 1994, and he has worked in safety since 2009. His job is crucial—whenever there is a hazard on the track, whether it is debris, a broken vehicle, or water, Bruno is the one tasked with regaining control of the situation.
Beyond the role of safety, the Taycan Turbo GT also serves as a testament to Porsche’s future-forward thinking. The advancements made in Formula E, such as the Attack Mode originally developed for their Porsche 99X Electric race car, are being integrated into consumer models like the Taycan. This additional burst of power, up to 120 kilowatts for 10 seconds, shows how innovations in electric racing are shaping the future of electric vehicles.
With works driver António Félix da Costa securing wins in Portland, and teammate Pascal Wehrlein earning Porsche’s first Formula E championship in London, it has been a stellar season for Porsche. Whether in the Porsche 99X Electric or behind the wheel of the Taycan Turbo GT, Porsche is driving full speed into the future of motorsport.
