What is Balanced Literacy? Why does it have this strange name: balanced literacy? What is it that we are trying to balance out here?
And, the most important thing, how does the balance approach work in the classroom?
By the end of this video, you’ll have a very clear understanding of what balanced literacy is and what exactly it is that you can expect if your child is being taught to read using this approach.
I will start by giving you a little bit of theory, and you’ll have access to VERY IMPORTANT background information so you can understand why balanced literacy has ended up dominating the school system.
In this video about the balanced approach to teaching reading, we also share lots of real-life examples to illustrate how it works in practice. That way, you’ll also know what to expect from reading instruction at school (if the balanced approach is used), which is also an extremely popular question many parents have.

In this video you will learn how balanced literacy came to be. Behind it, there are 2 opposing views for teaching reading: the Phonics approach and the Whole word/whole language approach.
These are 2 radically different methods for teaching reading.
The balanced approach (and how much stress and time is devoted to phonics vs whole word / whole language practice) differs from school to school and from teacher to teacher.
