STORYLINE:
Two top European Union officials travelled to Ukraine on Friday, looking to shore up the EU's support for Ukraine.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, visiting the Bucha mass grave along with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, said that "the unthinkable has happened here."
"We have seen the cruel face of Putin's army. We have seen the recklessness and the cold heartedness with which they have been occupying the city," said von der Leyen during the visit to Bucha, where images of bodies lying in the streets after Russian forces withdrew shocked the world.
Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk said Thursday on Ukrainian television that at least three sites of mass shootings of civilians during the Russian occupation have been found.
Fedoruk said hundreds have been killed and investigators are finding bodies in yards, parks and city squares.
Von der Leye says the European Union will also support Ukraine "in what ever way possible" and provide "brave Ukrainian soldiers" the weapons to defend their country.
"It is of utmost importance to make sure that they have the military equipment that is necessary to defend Ukraine, but also to resist the aggressor," she said.
She added that she will work with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and President Zelenskyy on the process of Ukraine joining the Europe Union.
