The United States has raised objections to South Korea's ban on imports of U.S. poultry following the discovery of highly pathogenic avian influenza cases in Washington and Oregon.

The South Korean trade ministry said on Thursday that the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said in its latest trade barriers report that the import ban by Seoul conflicts with the rule of the World Organization for Animal Health.

According to the Paris-based world body, import bans should be implemented on products from regions reporting the bird flu and not a blanket ban for all poultry meat from a country.

In December, South Korea imposed the ban on imports of all poultry products from America after several wild birds were reported to have contracted the bird flu.
