65 years of star movement around M51 the Whirlpool Galaxy. Around is in relative terms, the stars are actually in front of M51 since the stars are part of our Milkyway.
When we look at the stars, they are always in the same place. Night in, night out. But everything in the universe moves, stars included.
This video shows that movement. Best viewed in full screen on a monitor of TV. On a smaller mobile screen is harder to see.
I downloaded a capture of M51 from 1956, taken by the 48" Schmidt telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory, USA.
I than used a capture of my own taken in 2021 with my Meade LX200 8" telescope here in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
I made a sequence where the 2 pictures are alternating and the star movement becomes visible. Some with just a fraction, other with a real "jump".
