EU Approves 6th Round Of Sanctions Against Russia, Targeting Oil, Sberbank
INTERNATIONAL: The European Union approved the sixth round of sanctions against Russia on Thursday, including restrictive measures against Russian oil and top bank Sberbank, a day after it was delayed due to objections from Hungary.

EU leaders agreed in principle on the sixth round of sanctions against Russia at an extraordinary summit that ended on Tuesday, covering a "partial embargo" on Russian oil and the exclusion of Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, from the SWIFT, the payment system used for most international financial transactions.

Under EU rules, the sanctions need to be agreed unanimously by all 27 member states to take effect. After Hungary objected to parts of the measures, the package failed to be adopted on Wednesday, as originally scheduled.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on social media on Thursday that representatives from Russian companies would be barred from entering Parliament buildings with immediate effect.

The White House also announced new sanctions against Russia on Thursday. In a statement, the White House said the new sanctions were a further action by the United States.

The U.S. Treasury Department's new sanctions will target key Russian government and business officials. The State Department has also increased sanctions against a number of wealthy Russian businessmen with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In addition, the Commerce Department has imposed further restrictions on technologies and other materials that Russia needs.

The U.S. government decided to add 71 parties from Russia and Belarus to the entity list, forbidding them to use products manufactured by America's technologies or software.
