►For 100 years, drive shafts have been connected to differentials by u-joints or bolts. As of 2011 model years, BMW has reinvented that connection. Since then, BMW drive shafts thread into a single 50mm nut attached to the differential pinion flange. They can be found on most models, including the X3 and X5, as shown in this video. While we don't know exactly what caused BMW to make the change, we can show you what it looks like and how to work on it.
When servicing the BMW drive shaft coupling nut, these nuts are one-time-use and require replacement with a new nut. The new nut comes with thread locker pre-applied. The torque spec on the new nut is 100Nm.
