The Ansal brothers, Sushil and Gopal, convicted in 1997 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy, need not go to jail, said the Supreme Court. The court has asked the Ansals to pay Rs 30 crore each within three months.
The collective penalty of Rs 60 crore will be paid within the next three months and then utilised by the Delhi government.
The court said that the case of their conviction cannot be reopened and Wednesday’s hearing will remain focussed on their sentencing.
