Palestinians forced to live in tents in Gaza are grappling with flooding and destroyed shelters after severe weather hit the area. With temperatures dropping, hundreds of thousands are trying to stay warm in makeshift shelters.
Displaced Palestinians - particularly in Deir al-Balah, al-Mawasi and Khan Younis in southern Gaza - endured a gruelling night as their tents were flooded with rainwater and battered by strong winds.
“The children were soaked in water at night,” one displaced Palestinian woman said, explaining how the heavy rain and harsh weather have rendered the tents uninhabitable. “All night long, we have been holding on to our tents to cover ourselves. Where could we possibly go?"
At least five children have reportedly died from freezing conditions in the past two weeks, including one-month-old Jumaa al-Batran, who froze to death overnight on Sunday.
Edouard Beigbeder, Unicef’s regional director for the Middle East, said on Friday: “With temperatures expected to drop further in the coming days, it is tragically foreseeable that more children's lives will be lost to the inhumane conditions they are enduring.”
