This past SEMA Show was one for the ages. So many cool and custom vehicles on display will several new 4x4s competing for the spotlight. Among them the 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with new styling, new powertrain options and new tech throughout. When it came to building a new HD, Ernie Vole of Ernie's ATC in Vernon Hills, IL had a concept that tweaked our interest. Rather than lifting it sky high and and running 24s or even 28s he wanted to show off the truck's offroad prowess, keep it low and build a truck capable of bombing down a trail along the Baja peninsula.
Ernie's no stranger to building functional SEMA trucks, from prerunner trucks and offroad Jeeps to his most memorable ride the original Stubby F350 that graced the cover of Four Wheeler Magazine years ago. For this 2020 HD he needed the right suspension so he turned to BDS for the (preproduction) 2.5" coilover conversion system to ditch the factory torsion bars and UCA/LCA and upgrade to FOX 2.5 DSC coilovers, BDS chromoly UCAs and HD internally gusseted LCAs. Along with that FOX 2.0 IFP bump stops and a full width BDS skid plate. Out back this factory long leafs remain and a custom bed cage was fitted to mount the FOX 2.5 factory series remote resi shocks. This gives clearance for the 35x12.50 Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires on 17x9 XD Machete Crawl beadlocks.
The factory bumper was trimmed and supports were added to mount a Baja Designs lightbar along with a roof mounted rack with LP9 lighting all controlled by an sPod relay system. Other notable upgrades include a custom built internal rollbar to mount the PRP restraints and a Pro Eagle big wheel jack mounted in the bed.
