Gary Ridgway, also known as the "Green River Killer," was an American serial killer who confessed to murdering 71 women in the Seattle area between 1982 and 1998. He is believed to be one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.
Ridgway was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1949. He had a troubled childhood, and his father was physically abusive. Ridgway also suffered from a number of mental health problems, including schizophrenia and psychopathy.
In 1982, Ridgway began his killing spree. He would often pick up young women hitchhiking or working as prostitutes, and then strangle them to death. He would then dump their bodies in remote areas.
Ridgway was eventually caught in 2001 after DNA evidence linked him to the murders. He was convicted of 49 murders and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In a strange twist of fate, Ridgway's DNA was also linked to the murders of four women in California in the early 1970s. These murders had never been solved, and Ridgway was never charged with them. However, his confession to the Green River murders led to the reopening of the California cases, and the families of the victims finally received closure.
