Ontario chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe held their daily briefing on the impact of COVID-19 Monday.
During the briefing, Dr. Williams told reporters it was “a bit too early” to say whether Ontario had peaked in the number of COVID-19-related cases being confirmed on a day-to-day basis in the province.
Williams said that while travel-related cases have steadily dropped off, backlog and other testing issues may have contributed to inflated numbers in the past week.
Ontario health officials said Monday that 309 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, bringing the provincial total to 4,347. The death toll has risen to 132 with 13 new deaths. The province reported 589 hospitalizations due to the novel coronavirus, with 216 patients in intensive care.
Ontario health workers have tested 78,796 people and 329 are currently awaiting test results as the province works through a backlog.
