Landmark judgment in the Triple Talaq case is expected to come any moment as Supreme Court will pronounce the judgment. This will certainly put an end to the misery of many Muslim women who are abandoned by their husband on some pretext or the other. Triple talaq has so far been legal for Muslims according to the constitution, but several Muslim women who have been divorced because of it, including on Skype and on WhatsApp, have appealed to the top court to end the practice. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar had reserved its verdict on May 18 after a six-day marathon hearing during the summer vacation. On one hand the judgment is expected to bring much relief to the millions of hapless women while on the other hand, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which oversees the application of Muslim personal law, opposes any ban on triple talaq and argues this is a religious matter and not for the courts.
