Dec 28/2022 Winter Hike, Alberta Canada
Today I am in Kananaskis Country, and I will be hiking to Troll Falls, Marmot Falls, and the Upper Falls to see 3 beautiful Frozen Waterfalls. The trail is 6.4 kilometers out and back with an elevation gain of 168 meters. I was here in July and made a video of this hike in the summer. Now I am back to see the 3 waterfalls frozen. This is a very popular trail all year, so I recommend getting here early to get a parking spot.
The first part of the trail is very wide and well packed. I recommend have cleats and/or poles as the first part of the trail has a little up and down, and there were a few areas with ice. If you want to go to the second and third waterfalls traction devices are necessary. At .8k the trail opens up, and you get a great view looking a cross the Kananaskis Valley. As you proceed a little further you will see a large Teepee on your left and a smaller one a little further on your right. At 1.3k you will arrive at a little creek. But this time of year, there was only a little bit of ice in it. The trail now starts to open up, but then you will be heading back into some thicker trees. Soon you will arrive at Marmot Creek on your right. It is covered with ice and snow, but it is still flowing underneath. At 1.7k you will arrive at Troll Falls. I climbed up to the frozen waterfall to get some video of this waterfall from different angles. Now you have to backtrack a little bit, and take the bridge over Marmot Creek to work your way up to the second waterfall called Marmot Falls. For the first part this trail is flat but soon you will start and climb. There are some railings along the trail but as I said earlier you should have cleats, portions of this trail wear very icy. At 2.7k you will arrive at Marmot Falls. We watched a few people here learning to ice climb. I love this waterfall as you can go right behind it. Be careful if you are walking on the ice in front of it. I walked a little to close to the waterfall and put my foot right through the ice into the water. I proceeded up the stairs to the next waterfall, the Upper Falls. The stairs were all ice. As you hike up Marmot Creek will be on your left. There are lots of little ice formations and waterfalls. The creek is still flowing underneath. At 3.3k you will arrive at the Upper Falls. This is the largest of the 3, and it was a frozen cascading waterfall. Be careful heading back down as there are portions with ice, and it is very slippery.
This is a great little hike, and the 3 frozen waterfalls were awesome. There were lots of families here with children and a lot of people walking their dogs. The trail is very easy up to the first waterfall but it is a little tougher getting to the other 2 waterfalls. If you like frozen waterfalls this is a must do hike.
This is my 94th video. Thank you very much for watching. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up. If you would like to see my other hiking videos, subscribe to my channel, LIVE ON ALBERTA. I feature over 90 different hiking videos. CHEERS
