BMW M is making waves in the electric vehicle world by developing high-performance electric models that promise to redefine driving excitement. While the current i5 M60 and i7 M70 belong to the M Performance series, they are not fully-fledged M models like the iconic M3 or M5. These electric models are equivalent to the M240i or M340i in BMW’s traditional lineup, offering serious performance but not the ultimate M experience. However, BMW M’s journey toward a fully electric sports car is already well underway.
The development process started with prototypes based on the i4 M50, BMW M’s best-selling model in 2022 and 2023. A newly released behind-the-scenes video offers a rare glimpse into this electrifying journey. About two and a half minutes into the footage, Carsten Wolf, Head of Overall Vehicle Development at BMW M, drops a game-changing detail: future M electric models will feature four electric motors. This quad-motor setup promises unparalleled performance, enhanced driving dynamics, and cutting-edge features that push the limits of automotive engineering.
The prototype showcased in the video goes far beyond a standard i4 M50. It includes carbon-ceramic brakes, a reinforced body structure for added rigidity, and new subframes at both the front and rear axles. These modifications ensure precise handling and track-ready capabilities. While BMW keeps many technical details under wraps, these upgrades hint at a serious performance machine in the making.
BMW’s transparency about the challenges faced during development is equally refreshing. At one point in the video, an X7 SUV is seen jump-starting the electric prototype after it failed due to an issue with the air conditioning compressor. Engineers attempted a fix, but ultimately had to replace the front electric motors to get the vehicle back on track.
The stakes are high, as the BMW M team prepared the prototype for test drives by senior company executives. Their approval would pave the way for production, possibly as early as 2027 or 2028. Encouragingly, BMW M Chief Executive Officer Frank van Meel has already confirmed plans for an electric sports sedan with M3-like performance.
Interestingly, BMW is not abandoning its gasoline-powered roots. A next-generation M3 with an inline-six engine, codenamed "G84," is reportedly in development and could debut in 2028 with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. The future of BMW M is electrifying, but its legendary combustion engines are far from extinct.
