Composed in 1772, it is the second of three settings by the young Mozart, KV108, KV127, and KV276. Mozart made of this antiphon in praise of the Virgin. Regina Coeli is Latin for “Rejoice, Queen of Heaven,” Regina Coeli is an ancient Latin Marian antiphon, prescribed to be sung or recited in the Liturgy of the Hours.
Regina cæli, lætare, alleluia:
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia,
Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia,
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.
For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.
Has risen, as He said, alleluia.
Pray for us to God, alleluia.
