Following this year’s protests over racial justice and police conduct, questions about how to address those issues are expected to be front and center when the Nebraska Legislature convenes in January. Should towns and cities be required to have civilian board to oversee police conduct? Should there be stiffer penalties for people who participate in protests where violence occurs? Those are among the questions to be examined in our upcoming legislative preview episode of NET’s Speaking of Nebraska. The discussion will include three senators with key roles to play in the discussion: Sen. Justin Wayne, a proponent of police oversight, Sen. Tom Brewer, sponsor of legislation to penalize protestors if things turn violent, and Sen. Steve Lathrop, chair of the Judiciary Committee where these ideas – and others -- will be hashed out. NET legislative reporter Fred Knapp will moderate.
