Elon Musk, the tech titan notorious for his audacious predictions, has put forth another prophetic statement - superhuman AI could outdo human intelligence as early as next year. This claim is a notable revamp of Musk's prior forecast asserting that superintelligent AI would emerge by 2029.
The SpaceX and Tesla boss used the term “superhuman” to explain AI that surpasses individual human proficiency in any given task, while “superintelligent” is referred to an AI that outdoes the combined intellect of all humans in any task.
However, his ambitious timeline comes with a potential roadblock - the growing need for power and a looming shortage of elite AI training chips could impede their anticipated progress. Last year, the inability to procure enough Nvidia chips was the main constraint. This year, Musk fears power supply will become a critical limiting factor.
In light of his own startup, xAI, Musk continues to voice concerns over the potential risks of superintelligent AI. “It’s actually important for us to worry about a Terminator future in order to avoid a Terminator future,” Musk has stated. His startup is currently developing their chatbot, Grok AI, which stands toe-to-toe with leading model GPT-4 from OpenAI.
Despite his past predictions, like a Tesla driving autonomously from New York to LA by 2018, or reaching Mars the same year via his SpaceX Rocket company, not coming to fruition, his latest forecast has certainly provoked intriguing debates in the AI industry.
