France's youngest-ever prime minister, Gabriel Attal, was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron amid political pressure from the far right. Attal, 34, is also the first openly gay prime minister in France. The appointment follows the resignation of Elisabeth Borne, Macron's predecessor, amidst turmoil over an immigration law. Macron, who has shifted rightward on security and migration, is working with Attal to form a new government. Attal, a former Socialist Party member, joined Macron's movement in 2016 and gained public recognition as government spokesperson and education minister. He implemented policies such as banning long robes in classrooms to uphold secularism and launched experiments with school uniforms to reduce bullying. Attal, who revealed his past experiences of bullying, enjoys popularity according to French opinion polls.
