Here are my thoughts about the Feiyu-Tech G6 Plus based on a few months of experience.
This gimbal is not among the cheapest models – most of the time you can find it at prices between 250 and 300USD. And it fulfills the claim of being a reasonable replacement of separate stabilizers for a phone, mirrorless camera or actioncamera – this might be a super-great solution and well worth the money.
Build quality is superb. Parts of the gimbal are similar to the predecessor – the G6, which however is limited to mostly stabilizing action cameras. The G-series are oriented towards the more demanding consumers and partially – those of them that have the ambition to become professionals. Although classified as being DSLR capable gimbal...
The main controls are around the power button. There is a nice OLED display, a joystick to control the direction, a multifunctional knob and even a trigger button for quickly locking, or resetting the gimbal. Also – a quick lock button. What I truly love about the G6 plus is the ability to adjust the horizon without having to reset or to use the smartphone app as it is on most other gimbals.
As part of the accessories FT count the battery - replaceable – 26650 type and 5000mah – another awesome news! And it offers power for up to 9, if you are lucky – 12 hours, and on top of that you have battery status indication during the whole time.
In short – the G6 Plus looks and feels like a smaller brother of the AK2000 – which is more professional grade oriented – but since I am mostly testing action cameras and more portable shooting gear, I thought that’s the one that will make better sense to be reviewed.
As mentioned, the gimbal allows remote control of some GoPro Hero 7 functions – in order to enable this, you have to connect the gimbal to the app – which is super simple and requites Bluetooth connectivity.
I noticed that the gimbal will operate well with devices above 50-60 grams. If you notice vibrations – there are three possible reasons
- it is not well balanced
- some of the knobs is loose;
- the motor strength is too high
I tried the Panasonic G7 and I’ve had some remarkable results; I was actually surprised to see a mirrorless camera properly stabilized from a gimbal that seems to be mostly targeted to smartphones and actioncameras. But yes – it works! Thing is that if you want to be able to control the camera via the gimbal, it will have to be one of the certified models.
In fact the more I used the G6 plus, the better I was able to understand the features and config options and the more I can get out of it.
At the end – some of the things that I didn’t quite like – First of all – they could have used a type C port – and that was certainly going to be a great thing to appreciate.
Secondly, while the app is really good, I wish there was some sort of a better wizard at the start – guiding you through the first time setup – like – choosing your gimbal model, choosing whether it will be used with a phone or with a camera, and then – based on the weight – to fine tune the motors.
This is a gimbal I can definitely recommend – packing a handful of features, using his bigger brothers strengths at a much smaller scale and being able to replace most purposed-based devices for smartphones and actioncameras. And although not perfect, the smartphone app is decent, allowing you to do fine tune and configure practically everything about it.
