In Ancient Egypt, justice was often brutal and swift, reflecting the importance of maintaining Ma'at, the divine balance. Punishments ranged from forced labor in dangerous stone quarries, where criminals toiled under the scorching sun, to execution by impalement, a slow and agonizing death. Thieves faced amputation, symbolizing their removal from society, while more severe criminals were thrown into crocodile pits to be devoured. Sacrilege could lead to being burned alive, a fate feared for its impact on the afterlife. Liars risked having their tongues cut out, while blasphemers could be buried alive, left to suffocate in darkness. Nobles who betrayed the pharaoh were given poison, a grim but dignified end. Perhaps worst of all was the deprivation of burial, condemning the soul to eternal wandering without peace in the afterlife. Each punishment, harsh and symbolic, served as a warning to others, ensuring order and control in ancient society.
