I always thought of Hungarian goulash (gulyás) as being a stew (as the adapted version is in many other European countries). This dish exists (pörkölt) and they are both delicious. But to stop ignorant foreigners like myself from ordering the wrong thing English menus will generally call the 'real' dish "goulash soup".
