With a creaky bike, it may be difficult to distinguish a bicycle saddle creak, saddle squeak, seatpost creak or other causes. Here are some tips and tricks if the sound appears to be coming from the seat post or saddle:
1. Stick a piece of tape around the post so as to make it easy to reinstall to the right height. Remove the post and wipe with degreaser and dry. Do the same for the post itself and also remove the seatpost colar and clean. Grease the post (if carbon fiber use something like Fiber Grip) with a light coating. Also regrease the seat post, colar bolt which could also be the cause of the noise. Reassemble using a torque wrench to the specified manufactures torque, especially if working with carbon fiber. See if the creaking or squeaking is gone.
2. Next try a quick fix of spraying a shot of silicon where the seat rails contact the seat and on contact the seatpost clamp. This may eliminate the saddle creak / saddle squeak.
3. Often squeaks coming from your saddle indicate that the saddle clamp that attaches to the rails of your saddle needs to be tightened. Look under your saddle to determine how it attaches—with one or two bolts on the fore and/or aft sides of your seat post or on the side(s). Using a torque wrench compatible with your saddle bolt(s)—tighten the bolt or bolts to eliminate any movement. Under tightening will lead to movement and noise. Overtightening could cause breakage of the seat bolt while cycling or cracks to carbon fiber seatpost. Also confirm that the saddle clamp is within the fore and aft limits of the seat. Most saddles have marks on the rails that show maximum forward and rear positions. Saddles set outside these limits may creak or click.
4. Still not gone, time to remove the seat and re-lube the contact points between the seat rails and seat post. Mark the distance from the tip of the seat to the middle of the handlebars. Also, with a carpentor level, look at the tilt. This will be important in reassembly. Remove the saddle and clean to remove any grit or dirt that might be the cause of the creaking or sqweeking. Re-lube the rails that attach to the seat post. Reassemble making sure you have the same distance from the saddle tip to the middle of the handlebars, the correct tilt if any and the tip of the seat is lined up with the top tube. Alway use a torque wrench and torque to manufactures specifications.
If you still have bike noise, it's time to looks for other sources a creaky bike: creaking bottom bracket, pedals, chainring bolts, etc. If your saddle is well worn, swap it out with another saddle and see if that cures your problem.
