A winter storm that is bringing ice, sleet and snow to southern and central regions of the US, caused the cancelation of more than 1,700 flights and shutdown major highways.
More than 40 million people from Texas and Oklahoma to Kentucky and West Virginia have been warned to brace themselves for ice and wind chills. The Dallas Fort-Worth area set a new daily record for snowfall as sleet and freezing rain coated parts of North Texas on Tuesday.
The weather service said the Metroplex set a record of 1.3 inches of snow thus far, breaking a record from three decades prior. The last time the region saw this much snowfall was in 1985 with 1.2 inches.
The storm which brought freezing rain, sleet, and iced-over roadways, caused schools and businesses to close, and sent cars sliding on the highways. More than 900 flights into and out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport were canceled due to the icy conditions.
In the Fort Worth area, there were more than 140 reported motor vehicle collisions including 16 were rollover crashes. Road conditions in parts of Texas could remain treacherous for some time. The authorities said it will be using a salt and sand mixture to treat roads close to emergency facilities and icy bridges.
The cold weather and icy conditions coating North Texas are likely to continue through Thursday morning leading the National Weather Service to extend its winter weather storm warning.
The channel lists such natural disasters as:
1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, Volcanic eruption, Mud, Landslide, Avalanche;
2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological disaster,
3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire;
4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Tornado, Hail, Hurricane, Tsunami, Storm, Thunderstorm, Tempest.
