Shepherd's Pie is a traditional British dish with a rich history and a beloved comfort food for many. It's known for its savoury lamb meat filling and creamy mashed potato topping.
Shepherd's Pie originated in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The dish was a practical solution for using leftover roasted meat. Initially referred to as "Cottage Pie" when made with beef, the term "Shepherd's Pie" began to be used when the dish was made with lamb or mutton, reflecting the shepherd's connection to sheep.
The base of Shepherd's Pie is typically made with ground lamb, cooked with onions, garlic, and sometimes vegetables such as peas, carrots, and corn. The flavour is enriched with broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce, and it's seasoned with herbs like rosemary and thyme. The dish is topped with a layer of mashed potatoes, which may be garnished with cheese before baking for a golden crust.
The dish is assembled by placing the meat mixture in a baking dish, covering it with the mashed potatoes, and baking it in the oven until the top is golden and crispy. This method ensures the flavors meld beautifully, and the topping gets a delightful texture.
Shepherd's Pie is a staple in British and Irish cooking, often served in homes and pubs. It's particularly appreciated for its comforting qualities and ability to be filling and economical, making it a popular choice for family dinners and gatherings.
