Anniversary Mine Road is situated east of Las Vegas within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA). This area, managed by the National Park Service, spans portions of Nevada and Arizona. Lake Mead was created in 1935, preceding the completion of the Hoover Dam by less than one year. In 1964, Congress designated the expanded area as the first National Recreation Area.

The Anniversary Mine commenced operations in 1921, extracting borax from colemanite deposits found in the Lovell Wash and White Basin regions. Economic factors, including operating costs and increased competition from California, led to the mine's closure in 1928. During its operational period, the Anniversary Mine yielded approximately 200,000 tons of borate.

In addition to the mine site and tailings pile, the trail offers access to the Anniversary Narrows slot canyon hiking area and the Ore Car Mine, a site popular with hobbyist rockhounders. The Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area, located immediately to the north, provides opportunities for non-motorized backcountry recreation.
