The electrolysis of saturated sodium chloride solution (brine) is one frequently carried out in the school chemistry laboratory.
This experiment uses carbon fibre electrodes to electrolyse brine on a small scale and collect the gases produced at the electrodes.
SAFETY HAZARD - Wear gloves and safety spectacles
Gloves must be worn when handling the tubes to test for the product gases because one of the products of the electrolysis is sodium hydroxide which is corrosive. Aqueous sodium hydroxide solution forms in the electrolyte as the experiment progresses.
Use a fume cupboard for this electrolysis experiment
The gas at the anode is tested in the movie with blue litmus paper. The blue litmus turns pink and is then bleached white, confirming the presence of chlorine gas.
The gas produced at the cathode is tested in the next movie uploaded, named Electrolysis of brine using carbon fibre electrodes part 2 MVI 6015.
My compact camera records 720p movies limited to 10 minutes duration.
