What's the difference between Black and African in the modern United States? These categories have always been a bit fluid and confusing throughout history as the term used to describe those of African descent in the Americas have morphed over time. To many, the terms Black and African American are often used interchangeably but when discussing these from an ethnographic point of view, Black American is a specific ethnic identity forged over many centuries of Black African slaves being trafficked across the Atlantic and being brought to the US. Although these Africans, taken from many diverse tribes across West, Central and to a lesser degree other areas of Africa and originally spoke a wide variety of diverse languages, belonged to many religions (including a sizeable portion that were Muslim) and had an array of influence different Bantu and other Niger-Congo cultures. The formation of the Black American identity was gradual, and as the largest population of African descendants in the diaspora and are highly distinguished from other African-descendants in the Americas such as West Indians/Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Latinos and Maroons.
