STORYLINE
US President Barack Obama arrived in the German city of Dresden late on Thursday, fresh from delivering a centrepiece speech to the Muslim world during a high profile visit to Cairo, Egypt.
Obama now starts on the two day leg of his European tour which includes Germany and France.
The eastern city of Dresden, which was razed by Allied bombs and only finally rebuilt after German reunification, has been carefully chosen as the backdrop for Obama's visit to Germany as much for its symbolism as for its Baroque palaces and soaring stone dome.
The city is considered by many as Germany's cultural jewel of the east, is also close to the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial Obama plans to visit on Friday.
Though Obama's trip won't take him to the German capital, Chancellor Angela Merkel is pleased the president expressed an interest in the nation's former eastern states.
A spokesperson for Merkel said Dresden serves as a symbol of the destruction of war, but also of reconstruction.
On Saturday, Obama visits Normandy, France, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the best-known Allied invasion of German-occupied France, the June 6, 1944, landings at Normandy.
The president will also spend time in the capital, Paris, with French President Nicholas Sarkozy, with whom Obama said he had a "wonderful relationship."
