STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin met his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday, pledging help for Brazil's oil sector, space programme and bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Putin arrived in Brasilia late on Sunday. On Monday, he was given an official reception at the Planalto Palace.
It was the first time the Russian leader had visited the largest country of the South American continent.
After the meeting, both presidents oversaw the signing of a number of bilateral agreements.
In total, eleven were signed, covering areas such as cooperation in the area of petrol and gas, in the area of finance and space.
At a news conference following the signing ceremony, Putin said he and his host were trying to confront the new challenges of the world together, such as drug trafficking, international crimes and 'terrorism'.
Putin, who arrived on Sunday, predicted a sharp increase in trade between the nations, which now stands at two (b) billion US dollars a year.
The two leaders also agreed to help each other to expand their global influence.
Russia will support Brazil's bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Putin said.
In return, Brazil backs Russia's aspiration to join the World Trade Organisation of 148 nations.
Russia's Federal Space Agency agreed to help Brazil resume its space programme and restore its rocket-launching base, destroyed by an explosion last year that killed 21 people.
Brazil had hoped Russia also would drop a ban on imports of Brazilian meat products, imposed in September after foot and mouth disease was found in Brazilian livestock.
Later on Monday, Putin headed to Rio de Janeiro - the last stop on his visit.
