Biochar + Soil: Uncovering the Driving Mechanisms
Presenter: Kurt Spokas of USDA-ARS
Biochar is promoted as a panacea for numerous soil deficiencies, encompassing improving low nutrient holding capacity, boosting soil carbon sequestration, enhancing plant growth and yield, acting as a liming agent, amplifying water holding capacity, to increasing agrochemical sorption capacities; to name a few. Ever since the first scanning electron microscope images of biochar, hypotheses of biochar’s effects have focused on its porous structure to function as microbial habitat to increasing surface area for chemical interactions. However, what has been missing is a complete understanding of the exact mechanisms responsible for these beneficial responses. This knowledge would allow us to customize feedstock selection and biochar production/post-production processing to fully optimize these positive impacts. More importantly, it would allow prediction of the duration of biochar’s impacts. This presentation will examine one aspect of this complex process, which is the soil weathering effect on biochar. The interactions of biochar with water and dissolved cations could be one factor behind the conflicting soil, plant, and microbial responses that have observed from biochar additions.

ABOUT THE 2024 NORTH AMERICAN BIOCHAR CONFERENCE
US Biochar Initiative is a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to the advancement of the biochar industry in the Americas. Founded in 2009, USBI now hosts a yearly biochar conference.
We welcome you to the 2024 North American Biochar Conference video sessions. For 2024, we were delighted to host the largest biochar event in Sacramento, California. Our conference was a convening thought leaders, innovators, policymakers, and practitioners from diverse sectors, all committed to a climate-resilient future.
The theme for 2024 is "Climate Action with Biochar for Economic and Ecosystem Resilience." This theme underscores our commitment to exploring and enhancing the role of biochar in sustainable practices, carbon sequestration, waste management, and more. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive platform for learning, collaboration, and advancement in the biochar sector.
Join USBI for the 2025 North American Biochar Conference coming September 15-18, 2025, in Minneapolis, Minnesota! Watch biocharconference.com for updates and information.
