In a recent study, Indonesia's capital Jakarta, has been identified as the world's most polluted city. The air pollution problem has been a long-standing issue in this region, with a combination of factors such as factories, coal-fired power plants, and traffic congestion collectively contributing to the haze and smog prevalent in the area. In 2019, a group of concerned residents filed a civil lawsuit against the government, alleging that it had neglected its responsibility to address air pollution and safeguard their entitlement to clean air. Interestingly, the Central Jakarta District Court ruled in their favor, confirming that the Government had indeed violated the country's environmental protection laws. In response to the court ruling, the government is taking steps to improve air quality. These include improvements to public transportation, stringent actions against the burning of fossil fuels, regulation of vehicular usage, the imposition of pollution taxes, emissions testing for vehicles, promotion of work-from-home alternatives, public awareness campaigns on emission reduction, heightened supervision of industrial and power generation sectors, and collaboration with local governments and businesses to elevate air quality standards. While these measures appear promising, it will require time before a noticeable enhancement in air quality becomes evident in Jakarta.
