The reliability of modern DSG gearboxes has improved compared to earlier versions, according to automotive journalist Alex Robbins. While early iterations of DSG gearboxes, such as the DQ250 six-speed and DQ200 seven-speed, had a reputation for reliability issues, subsequent changes and modifications have addressed many of these problems. The introduction of 40,000-mile fluid-change intervals and improvements in the control units have significantly reduced the failure rate of DSG gearboxes. More recent DSG iterations are considered to be more reliable, and the steady flow of complaints has decreased. Robbins, who has owned two DSG-equipped cars himself, recommends following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, including regular fluid changes, to minimize the risk of failure. He concludes that the previous reputation of DSG gearboxes should not deter potential buyers from considering newer DSG-equipped vehicles. However, it is important to stay up to date with maintenance to ensure long-term reliability.
