In ancient Greek thinking, beauty of humans exists in every age and thanks to this many mortals became immortal. Praise of the physical beauty of ordinary young persons, male and female, in ancient Greece, by their contemporaries and peers is evidenced by inscriptions incised (graffiti) on vases or painted on stone architectural members. Essentially, they are salutations praising the beauty mainly of men and more rarely of women, who were actual persons in Late Archaic and Classical Athens.
In 2021 the Museum of Cycladic Art hosted a major, emblematic, archaeological exhibition entitled “ΚΑLLOS. The Ultimate Beauty” in which the multiple aspects of the concept of Kallos in the everyday life and the philosophical discourse of ancient Greece were presented. The exhibition’s units are accompanied by the respective videos. The exhibition was curated by the General Director of the Acropolis Museum Professor Nikolaos Chr. Stampolidis and the Curator of Antiquities of the Museum of Cycladic Art, Dr Ioannis D. Fappas, is mounted in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sport, with the generous support of L’Oréal.
