The National Centre for Educational Resource Development presents:

Directed by Subraj Singh and Al Creighton and performed by the National Drama Company (of Guyana).
The NDC is the professional performing arm of the National School of Theatre Arts and Drama in Guyana. It is a company of dramatists, writers, directors, actors and actresses, dancers, choreographers, musicians, singers, stage managers and designers committed to excellence, research, innovation and advancement in the theatre.
Ti Jean and His Brothers is a play by foremost West Indian poet and playwright Derek Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. This play mixes classical drama with Caribbean folk traditions. It is a comedy with elements of the tragic and with social commentary in the West Indian History of slavery, colonialism and the struggle for political independence. The story is set in the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia and tells about the folk hero of local mythology, the boy Ti Jean who challenges the Devil and uses his wits and cunning to defeat him. Note that it is taken from St. Lucian mythology and the story telling tradition of the Caribbean, mixing it with classical Greek theatre. There is a chorus of talking animals, as in a fairy tale, a fable or a West Indian folktale. Folklore characters appear and they are used as dramatic symbols, in the same way that the Devil disguises himself as a white planter – another symbol of slavery and colonialism, with the power to oppress, or to grant liberation, freedom and independence.
The Story begins on a rainy night in the forest where a group of small animals gather to listen to the terrifying tale told by the Frog.
