VIDEO SUMMARY
This video looks at how the UK manages extreme weather events, such as floods, strong winds, and storms, as well as cold temperatures. The Thames barrier is an example of one of the ways flooding is managed, as it is a large movable flood barrier that spans 520 meters across the River Thames. The Environment Agency is responsible for flood management and constantly monitors ground moisture levels to make accurate predictions of when flood events are likely to occur. Insurance companies and the government have an agreement in place that states people who buy new build properties on floodplains will face higher insurance premiums. The UK Met Office has advanced technology to make accurate predictions about weather events, and they can issue severe weather warnings to a wider audience. Water companies can announce hose pipe bans in times of drought, and may also apply for an official drought order. Local councils are responsible for safety along UK roads, and will salt major roads and send out plows in the event of heavy snowfall. Charities will work to raise public awareness and support for those most at risk during extreme cold temperatures. Need more help with GCSE Geography? Visit the tutor2u Geography website:
