In this tutorial, I talk about exposure and how it relates when you’re post processing your images.

One thing I want to clear up because I muddled it in the video. As far as the histogram is concerned, when the tones are built up to the left, I said that is exposing to the left (ETTL) that isn’t necessarily the case. When you PURPOSELY expose the scene so you’re pushing the histogram to the left from where it began, that is exposing to the left. Same thing if you’re exposing to the right (ETTR). Just because the histogram is mostly showing tones to the left or to the right doesn’t necessarily mean the photographer exposed to the left or right. The scene just might have an abundance of tones in those areas. If a scene has mostly dark tones, the histogram might be built up on the left, if you add exposure you’re pushing the histogram to the right, even if a little bit, you’re actually exposing to the right.
