Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg slammed former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remarks suggesting that Sarawak should help develop other less developed Malaysian states, calling the suggestion unreasonable.

“I’m too lazy to comment, it’s unreasonable. We are a state, not the federal government. The one who helps poor states should be the federal government. How can we help others when we haven't finish
our own efforts yet?

“They collect petroleum and corporate tax that goes to the federal government. Sarawak only receives a portion through sales tax,” he responded.

He also dismissed Dr. Mahathir’s comparison between Sarawak and Kedah, stressing the significant difference in size.

“He compared Sarawak with Kedah. How big is it compared to Sarawak? Our size is the same as the entire peninsula. If you want to compare with the budget given to all the states in the peninsula you cannot put Sarawak at the same level as Kedah,” he said.
