My thanks to the Memories of Alton Hampshire website ([ Ссылка ]) for permission to use the photographs of the Butts and the Police Station, and to Jane Hurst for providing a photograph of the police station and for her invaluable advice on locations.
On the 24th of August, 1867, an horrific murder took place in the Hampshire market town of Alton. The victim was an 8-year-old girl by the name of Fanny Adams, and the crime took place in the hop garden, situated above Flood Meadows, a picturesque open space located just a short distance from the town centre.
Whilst playing on the meadow with her sister Lizzie and her friend, 7-year-old Minnie Warner, Fanny was carried away by a young man in a tall hat.
That evening, Fanny's mutilated body was found in the hop garden by Thomas Gates.
A suspect was immediately arrested, a 29-year-old solicitor's clerk by the name of Frederick Baker.
In this video, we follow the events of that long ago day, when Fanny Adams was murdered, and discuss how the murder impacted on the family of the victim, as well as on the community at large.
We also follow the trial of Frederick Baker, through to his execution on Christmas Eve 1867.
