The main line to the east out of Perth makes its way through the Darling Ranges via the dual gauge Avon Valley route. The line enters the hills on the outskirts of Perth, near Bells Rapids, where the Swan River leaves the Darling Ranges to meander through Perth across the Swan Coastal Plain, before emptying into the Indian Ocean.
Seen in this video is a mixture of narrow and standard gauge services recorded at the entrance to 'Number 2 cutting' at the beginning of the Avon Valley route.
The first service, at 00:13, is an up standard gauge interstate freighter, 6MP5 from Melbourne, hauled by NR120 and NR9.
A few minutes later, at 01:33, train number 2K45 on a down narrow gauge grain train, headed by P2507 'Shire of Perenjori' and P2513 'Shire of Morawa', roar past the camera as they power against the 1 in 200 grade into the Darling Ranges.
Shortly afterward at 02:23, an up standard gauge Minara Resources train, powered by Q4017 powers train number 1430 into the outer suburbs of Perth, headed for the port of Kwinana.
