History of Emergence The art of Angguk Kulon Progo is believed to have appeared around 1900. Where the idea came from a dance party for Dutch soldiers and officers. They danced and sang when they occupied the Purworejo district, Central Java. So in Kulon Progo where the art of Angguk first appeared was in an area directly adjacent to Purworejo, Central Java, namely the Kokap sub-district. At the beginning of its appearance, the players (dancers) of the Angguk art were men. This art develops in rural areas, especially in the western and northern parts of Kulon Progo (Temon, Kokap, Girimulyo). However, this art is also found in the Sentolo sub-district, although its presence is not as early as in Kokap. Until the 1990s, this art in Kulon Progo was only played by male dancers. In 1991, in the hamlet of Pripih, Hargomulyo, Kokap, for the first time, the art of nodding with female dancers (anguk putri) appeared, which was held on August 17, 1991. male dancer. This is said to be because the audience feels more happy (entertained) to see women's dancing styles. As a manifestation of the development of the art of nodding, Kulon Progo initiated the birth of Senam Angguk, whose movements largely imitate those of the Angguk dance.
