According to WWF, this is why Green Turtles matter:
Green turtles graze on seagrasses and algae, which maintains the seagrass beds and makes them more productive (much like mowing the lawn to keep it healthy). Seagrass consumed by green turtles is quickly digested and becomes available as recycled nutrients to the many species of plants and animals that live in the sea grass ecosystem. Seagrass beds also function as nurseries for several species of invertebrates and fish, many of which are of considerable value to commercial fisheries and therefore important to human food security.
Why is a green turtle called green?
And just In case you are wondering why the turtle is not green? It’s because they are in fact named Green turtles for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat, not their shells. The smooth, heart-shaped shell can be a blend of different colors, including, brown, olive, gray, or black.
Interesting they are one of the largest sea turtles, and the only herbivore! They are found around the world in warm subtropical and tropical ocean waters, and nesting occurs in over 80 countries.
Sea turtles can sleep at the surface while in deep water or on the bottom wedged under rocks in nearshore waters. Many divers have seen green turtles sleeping under ledges in reefs and rocks.
They are an endangered species!
